Access To Work

VANCOUVER  In 2009 Assistive Technology-BC hosted a series of highly successful career fairs across the Province to promote the employability of job seekers with disabilities.

The career fairs were designed to create optimal opportunities for matching job seekers with disabilities with employers.  The Access To Work career fairs were delivered as a series of informal structured networking events.

261 job seekers with disabilities,  employers, service providers and representatives from post-secondary institutions and government actively participated in four events in four regions of the province.

The events were structured to include:

  • Discussion and sharing of best practices
  • Presentations on hiring a person with a disability
  • Demonstration of assistive technology
  • Question period
  • Displays with job postings, information and resources

As a result of the events 80 job seekers with disabilities were able to connect with 88 employers, human resources personnel were informed and educated about the importance of inclusive hiring practices, and valuable relationships were established.
