Success Story
Small in Stature With Quiet Voice, but Big on Determination
Enrolled in a one-year intensive computer program, David is further increasing his knowledge and level of expertise. He is dealing with daily challenges most of us cannot imagine. David is living with Spinal Muscular Atrophy; he has only minimal movement in one hand, enough to move a mouse on a small platform attached to his wheelchair. The mouse points to an on screen keyboard, which fortunately works seamlessly with the curriculum software required in the program.
In order to provide the optimum technology solution with an integrated approach for David, ATBC collaborated with GF Strong to identify solutions for positioning a laptop computer, accessing the curriculum requirements, and amplifying David’s soft voice for classroom communication. David impressed everyone with his practical and common sense approach to completing his required assignments and projects.
When David sits in his wheelchair, his face is about level with the top of a standard height desk or table. A laptop computer open on the table is at the height for him to see the display without having to turn his head or crane his neck. David has good reasons for not wanting mounting hardware for the laptop. First. he has a personal attendant who can move the laptop for him. Second, the hardware would have to be removed when he is using Handy dart or city busses. And finally, it makes the computer more obvious and a target for theft. (As noted earlier, David is very practical).
David’s voice is so quiet that his classmates and instructors have difficulty hearing when he speaks in class. Upon GF Strong’s recommendation, ATBC provided a ‘Chatterbox’ personal amplifier and a ‘Collar Mic’ microphone, which technicians at GF strong Rehab Centre mounted on his wheelchair. Soft Type 4.5, an on-screen keyboard software, was configured on a Dell laptop computer along with MS Office and Dragon Naturally Speaking Voice input software. David tested Dragon at GF Strong, and with coaching and training provided by ATBC, this seemed a perfect solution for writing text. Ever practical, David noted he had a mouse that worked well for him and he would use that one with his new equipment!
David, small in stature with a quiet voice, is big on determination and with appropriate Technology Supports in place, he will complete his studies, of that he is sure.
